I can honestly say I've never been the type to do things the "right" or "traditional" way. That's just never been my style. So now I sit here in my room with a degree in Architecture, a love for service, and the yearning for something bigger than myself. I decided to take a gap year.
The decision was easy for me. I know who I am, what I'm passionate about, and what I'm capable of. So many people scoffed at the idea, didn't understand it, or didn't support it. The difference is, I didn't need their confirmation to know I was making the right decision for me. So gap year it is! I've been applying for positions with Americorps in hopes of working for any organization that would take me. But to be honest, I've had my heart set on working for Habitat of Philadelphia... From the moment I took a trip down to West Virginia for Alternate Spring Break to work with Habitat, I knew this organization was something special to me. I still find it hard to put into words how that experience changed my life, despite how many times I've tried. Hopefully you get the idea...
So why start my blog today? This morning I received a phone call from Atlanta, Georgia. That's probably bizarre to some people, but I knew exactly why someone was calling me from there. So after being drilled about being a US citizen with a high school degree and a drivers license, I was asked if I would like to accept a position working for Habitat for Humanity of Philadelphia. HECK YES! I literally started crying, haha. I wonder how many times that happens to these people? Probably not often, I'm just that crazy.
So today I am in the process of accepting a position at Habitat and I can't stop smiling! There has just been so many great things happening in my life and I am more thankful than I can express to everyone who has helped me get to this point. So as a brief recap...
Graduated college? CHECK
Went to Europe for a second time? CHECK
Got a boy friend? (If you know me, you know that's a big deal haha) CHECK
Got a job? CHECK
I totally read a book on how to be happy called "The Happiness Project" and let me tell you, you don't need an entire year to change your life. It can happen in a day. So thank you times a million to everyone who has helped me become who I am, helped me realize my dreams, and still support me at this very moment. It's only the beginning of the great things I'll be doing in my lifetime :)
